New Chip Breakers for Smaller-Size Machining Applications
TaeguTec has introduced two new chip breakers specifically for smaller-size products machining. The FU and FS chip breakers minimize the built-up-edges that occur during machining due to their sharp cutting edges which ensure longer tool life. Designed as double-sided, four-corner inserts, they are more economical than the existing positive inserts for Swiss turning.
The FU chip breaker, for general purpose machining, has a wide chip control area. The FS chip breaker for super finishing applications has excellent chip control capability at low depths of cut, thus minimizing swarf challenges during machining.
Even though both the FU and FS chip breakers are double-sided, they are characterized by low cutting load and vibration acting like single-sided types when mounted to the holder.
The double-sided RHINOTURN SWISS FU and FS items include high quality sharp cutting edges, through a micro unit chipping control system, resulting in excellent surface roughness and precision at low depths of cut.
Both chip breakers come in the latest PVD grades̶ — T4410 and TT4430 grades — providing excellent performance in Swiss type automatic lathes.
Features
FU chip breaker
– Wide chip control range
– For Swiss type automatic lathes general purpose machining – Low cutting load and vibration
FS chip breaker

New Turning Chip Breakers and Grades For Swiss Type Automatic Lathes
When machining small components in Swiss type automatic lathes, longer tool life, excellent surface roughness and good chip control are required under low machining conditions. In addition, when processing a variety of workpiece materials, an integrated grade is required without the need of grade replacement. In line with these demands, TaeguTec has developed a new PVD coating grades and new chip breakers that can be applied to various materials and cutting ranges.
The new PVD coating grades TT4410 and TT4430 implement excellent wear resistance, longer tool life, as well as good surface finish and dimensional precision in various materials of small component machining under low cutting speed and feed. This is due to its superfine substrate, good coating adhesion, specialized coating layer that prevents coating peeling, improved chipping resistance and ground surface.
The SL chip breaker for super finishing has excellent chip control in areas with a low depth of 0.25 mm or less, minimizing chip control problems during machining.
The general purpose SM chip breaker has a low cutting force and good chip control in a wide area with a cutting depth of less than 1.5 mm. It ensures good surface finish and dimensional precision.
The SH chip breaker has a wide groove width, which is particularly suitable for processing automotive parts and has a low cutting force and good machining quality even at a maximum cutting depth of 3.5 mm.
In addition, the line offers the “– F” type with a sharp edge that generates excellent surface finish due to the low cutting force, and the “– E” type with micro honing that prevents chipping during operation ensuring stable and longer tool life.

New External Holders with Double-Sided Inserts for Swiss Type Automatic Lathes
For Swiss type automatic lathes, hook-leaver type holders for conventional double-sided RHINOTURN inserts come as the only option in the miniature machining market. Now, TaeguTec has introduced screw clamping type sleeve holders and external holders for external machining that generates better precision and clamping force for Swiss turn machining. The newly added holders (sleeve and external type) are fitted with double-
sided RHINOTURN inserts, with twice the number of corners compared to the competition’s holders for ISO positive inserts.
The new sleeve holders can be mounted to the rear tool post for complex geometry applications in external
machining. Available as T-BURST standard items and in several shank sizes, the new line accommodates all Swiss type automatic lathes.
External holders are available for C, D, T and V type inserts to meet the demands of a variety of applications. Available in three shank sizes – 12,16 and 20 mm – the external holders are suited for Swiss turning.
The external holders are also available as standard T-BURST items to cover the widest range of Swiss turning applications.

3 New Holder Types Introduced to the Product Line: SLEEVE Holder, Y-AXIS Holder and SHIFT Holder for Swiss Type Automatic Lathes
The TOPMINI SLEEVE holder is designed to be mounted on the rear tool post for external machining. As such, it eliminates the shortage of tools on the tool post when machining complex geometries. Not only does the T-BURST holder enable increased tool life and superior chip control, it is available in a variety of shank sizes for all Swiss type automatic lathes.
Unlike conventional holders, the Y-AXIS holder mounts to the tool post so the upper side of the insert faces downwards for more effective chip evacuation as chips easily eject downwards without interference during machining. An additional advantage of the Y-AXIS holder is improved rigidity due to the fact that the holder is mounted in the same direction of the workpiece’s rotation realizing high precision and even more stable machining. It is optimally designed for difficult-to-cut materials such as aluminum, low carbon steel as well as stainless steel. The T-BURST type holder is also available as a Y-AXIS holder.
The SHIFT holder is an unconventionally shaped holder which completes finishing applications without retreating to the workpiece’s guide bush after the roughing stage. A further benefit of the SHIFT holder design is that the extra space, between the holder and the workpiece, ensures easier chip removal making it suitable for the machining of thin and long workpieces in Swiss type automatic lathes.
For additional technical information, please contact the relevant product manager.
